Joy is a still life colored pencil drawing of a kinder joy egg. The first time I had one of these was in Europe, because they were banned in America. Then, it was an actual egg holding a toy inside. I really like having these now, because it reminds me of that trip to Europe. These eggs were released in 1974, and made by the Italian company Ferrero. They were banned because of the toy inside of the chocolate. Kids were mistaking the toy for candy as well, and choking when they tried to eat it. As a solution, the company separated the candy and toy altogether, scraping the chocolate egg and putting the toy on the other side of the egg. I picked this name for this piece because of the name of the candy, but also because candy seems to be something that brings joy to everyone.

Mirror is a self portrait in the medium of pencil. I’ve titled this pencil piece ‘Mirror’. I choose this title because the goal of a self portrait is to make it look exactly like you. Almost like looking in a mirror. But sometimes it’s hard to put emotion into art when you just are copying off a picture. So this was a Journey of finding out what a self portrait can mean to me. I am a sophomore at Hillsboro High School. I lived in a few places when I was really young, but have only ever gone to school in Hillsboro. I am in Theater and Speech, and in the summer I go to Trollwood Performing Arts School. I've always been really involved and interested in the arts.

Electric is a acrylic paint project made of two electric guitars. It is separated into 4 squares, depicting 4 different styles in each square. The styles are pointillism, abstract, Impressionism, and realism. The pictures used as reference for this painting were both guitars owned by one of my favorite musicians Julien Baker. Julien is well known for her guitar playing throughout her fans. I decided to use these as my references because I thought the effect the pink guitar would have in realism would be very eye catching. Guitars were first made in the late 1500s- early 1600s. The oldest surviving guitar was made in 1590, and is displayed in Phoenix Arizona. Over the century’s guitars have adapted and changed quite a bit. In my painting, electric guitars are being displayed. Electric guitars are especially known for depicting symbols of rock and roll. My painting has stars in the background to give off that same feel.

Under the Mountain Moon is a surrealist watercolor project. We had just finished our morning activities and everyone was hungry for lunch. As the camp counselors gathered us around they told us there was a catch. Each of our groups of three needed to complete a task to be excused for lunch. They started giving small tasks to each of the camper groups. First was the group on the top of the hill, who was told to run to the other side of the field. Then was the group beside us who had to find a flower and bring it back. They kept calling off groups until it came to me, Chloe and Madi. The task we were given was to climb to the top of the biggest slide on the playground. We each ran, desperate for our lunch. When I had gotten to the top first, I wasn't alone. There was already a cowboy sitting at the top of the slide! This shouldn't have been too surprising, it was a horse camp after all. Having a dream surrounding horses represents mobility and stamina according to Dream Dictionary

“Chesapeake” is a gouache painting I did in my sophomore year of highschool. I wanted to create an atmospheric energy with the dark warm lighting. My goal with this was to make the viewer feel like they could be a part of the painting. There were a few challenges when deciding what to do and how to go about it. I had thought of a few ideas for the bottom of the painting, but eventually decided to frame the subjects with the contrasting teal. I was hoping this created a sophisticated feel.
I was inspired by the artist J.C. Leyendecker, and many of his portraits. He did many dynamic portraits, usually in casual settings, which was the inspiration for my subjects. I created the work because I wanted to indulge the audience in an atmospheric piece. I used some of my past work as a reference for tyle when I was not taking style directly from Leyendecker. I wanted my past painting and this one to be cohesive, yet unique. While painting, I didn't have a clear vision of how I wanted it to look at the end, which made the process exciting, as I didnt know how it would turn out. I wanted to use his work because of his iconic style. Some things I particularly noticed about his work were the intricate folds of the fabric. His rendering of the hands is extremely well done and his work of light shows his talent and skill. His dynamic poses add a natural and lively feel to his subjects. Although his goal was never hyperrealism, his natural posing and light makes the portraits seem realistic. He often chooses to portray a solid white background, not withholding the texture of each simple brushstroke outlining his subjects. When he wasn't using this method for the background, he would have skillfully rendered objects and furniture. I chose his art because of all of these reasons, and I thought it would be a challenge to depict his satisfyingly crisp highlights and dynamic shadows. I would love to be able to depict more of his style in the future.
J.C. Leyendecker was a German artist born 1874 and died 1951. J.C. (Joseph Christian) was well known in his time for his work on various advertisements. Leyendecker was trained at the Chicago Art Institution, as well as a school in Paris. Leyendecker was apprenticed at the very young age of 16, where he bettered his skills and which later led him to his commercial work. He often worked with a special medium that combined oil and turpentine in his painting, which helped to create his iconic style. Many have imitated and studied Leyendeckers paintings, including acclaimed artist Norman Rockwell, who was said to imitate Leyendecker in every way he found possible. Leyendecker moved to America with his family when he was eight, and died in New York. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery next to his parents and his brother. You can view his paintings at Haggin Museum in California.

The Great Gatsby is a gouache painting inspired by the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Great Gatsby was written in 1925 and takes place in the 20s. The story is filled with glamorous parties and flappers. The book was said to be inspired by parties Fitzgerald had attended on Long Island in 1922. The Great Gatsby has several movie adaptations, including one from 1974. The most popular of these adaptations is from 2013, starring Leonardo Dicaprio as Gatsby. The painting I created depicts that sense of glamor with 2 flappers. Here's how I tried to create that feeling.

This Ceramics piece, Scarred, was my first time sculpting a person. I took general inspiration from painting done by artists such as J. C. Leyendecker. Half of the sculpture's face is meant to be scarred and melted. It was intended to be a a large contrast in the rough side of the face versus the very pristine collar

Vacillator is an acrylic painting depicting singer songwriter Ethel Cain. Ethel Cain is known for her storytelling in her music, with songs like House in Nebraska and American Teenager depicting that storytelling element. The image I referenced for my painting was photographed for Homme Girls magazine.

Lead Poisoning is my first watercolor work of the year. This painting is a picture of one of my favorite musicians and artists, Ethel Cain. Hayden Anhedonia, also known by her stage name, Ethel Cain, grew up in Florida. She is known for her unique music, straightforward lyrics, and especially her southern gothic aesthetic. Hayden is 26 years old, and currently has 3 albums and 2 EPs out. Hayden produces and makes all of her music on her own, even going under her own record label “Daughters of Cain”. Hayden has gone by 2 alternative stage names before settling on Ethel Cain, those being White Salis and Miss Anhedonia.

This artwork, apathy, is a pencil piece done in 2025. It features the music artist known as Ethel Cain. Ethel Cain recently released an EP, making this her 5th record. Her most popular record is her album “Preachers Daughter”, a debut of Cain’s trilogy storytelling project. The trilogy will be followed soon with her album “Willoughby Tucker, I Will Always Love You”, which is coming out in August. This trilogy follows the fictional character of Ethel Cain, her love with Willoughby, and her eventual death. Overall Cain is known for her storytelling antics and aesthetics in her music.

Arrow Collar Women (Self Portrait) is a mixed media self portrait, as the title alludes to. It is named after and inspired by Joseph Christian Leyedenckers infamous Arrow Collar Man. The Arrow Collar Man is a series of ads J.C. painted for Arrow Collar Shirts. The iconic ads soon became well known, and spread around as the definition of masculine beauty. Women were known to look for a man with the “Leyendecker look”. Posing as the model for these ads was Charles Beach, J.C.’s close companion. This self portrait in the style of these paintings offers an interesting juxtaposition of femininity where it hadn't been before.

This piece- light project -is a mixed media project. I was given this idea to display the light from behind the subject instead of adobe or in front of. This almost untraditional use of light gives a more dark ambiance that I was looking for. It is supposed to feel like a cold early morning.

My Legacy

For my mural legacy project, I wanted to create something to have a lasting impact on the school. Something that I was happy to leave behind, that I thought encapsulated my time at Hillsboro High School. I was happy to choose to do this project, and happy to leave a mark on this school that I can be proud of. Although a cheesy sentiment, I truly believe that being yourself can get you great things in life.

My name is Charlie Johnson, and I am currently a senior art student at Hillsboro High School. I've really enjoyed my time at the High School, especially in the art program. I started art classes as soon as I could, and have progressed up to Art 5. I've had a lot of fun at art competitions and trips, and have been awarded various awards such as 1st at the state competition for governor's choice, 1st at VCSU, and 1st at NDSU. I plan to pursue an art based career and am going to Pacific Northwest College of Art and Design for a bachelors in fine arts with a focus in painting.

My Major Project is an acrylic self portrait. I tried to evoke a certain feeling in the color palette and facial expressions. I also wanted to create an almost surrealist feel with the background design and the mini-me on my own shoulder. I wanted to create emphasis on the eyes with the light-colored eyes.
